About Jax

A rebuilt heart. The one gift he'll never outgrow.

Judging by his energy now, you wouldn't know Jax was born with a congenital heart defect. He was diagnosed in utero with a condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. It meant that blood was not flowing properly through the heart and surgery would be needed before his first birthday. Thankfully, his parents chose Children's National, where world-renowned specialists corrected his heart defect and got him off and running.

Susan Cummings, MD, MPH

Pediatric Cardiologist

I do think the ability to offer sub-specialty care in pediatrics is unique to Children's. There's a wide breadth of experts and within each subspecialty those experts can dig deeply and give the family answers that you know are accurate. They're not pulling from something they've read about; they're making a diagnosis based on their experience in other children.

Susan Cummings, MD, MPH, specializes in imaging of the heart including fetal, transthoracic, and echocardiograms during surgery. A special interest includes teaching echocardiology to trainees as part of their pediatric cardiology fellowship. Dr. Cummings is committed to educating parents about their child’s condition, diagnosis, and care plan to empower them to become advocates for their child’s health.

Nursing

Our nurses specialize in pediatric nursing, ensuring that all patients at the hospital as well as visitors to either the hospital or one of the many Children’s Health Centers have a skilled expert to provide care.

Nurses at Children's National have a legacy of commitment to the health and well-being of children. They are an essential part of the healthcare team, bringing skill and compassion to every patient they treat and always putting the needs of children first.

Children's National has an award-winning nursing staff and is one of an elite group of hospitals to have achieved Magnet® designation, a nationally recognized accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Child Life

Child life specialists can provide psychological preparation for medical procedures, as well as emotional support before, during, and after treatment. Child life specialists are specially trained and certified to help children, adolescents, and families understand and cope with illness, treatment, hospitalization, and therapeutic play experiences. Child life specialists are responsible for maintaining unit playroom and teen room activities. In addition, child life specialists can provide games, toys, small electronics, and help in celebrating milestones such as patient birthdays.

Why Children's

National leadership in the use of fetal echocardiography to evaluate an unborn baby's heart.

Childhood should be a time for discovery, wonderment, and care-free play. So to discover a baby will enter the world with a heart defect can be frightening. The good news is that development in early diagnosis and early treatment can reverse many of these issues to give children the best chance at the healthy, robust heart he or she deserves.

Choosing the Children's National Heart Institute ensures care by nationally and internationally known specialists who have created one of the top pediatric cardiology departments in the nation. Our care begins during pregnancy with an early diagnostic test. Once a diagnosis is made, we'll develop a plan to track the baby's progress through the rest of pregnancy and prepare for the baby's arrival.

If corrective surgery is needed, we provide exceptional care from a complete team of pediatric experts. The benefit of early surgery is that infants can return to normal health sooner and develop naturally with a heart that can embrace all the rigors of childhood.

Children's National sees children from around the region, nation, and world who need the kind of specialized pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery expertise we offer. No matter what a child needs, we can provide care that's just right.
