About Alexandria

After a battle with cancer, her 16th birthday is even sweeter.

Alexx and her grandmother thought the swelling in her left leg was from cheerleading, a simple injury that just needed some ice. But when the injury didn't heal, further tests revealed it was osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that manifests in the body's larger bones. At Children's National, Alexx found the treatment and support she needed to move through her cancer journey. Today she's celebrating more than a birthday; it's a new beginning as she embraces a bright and healthy future.

Meet the Team

We believe every child deserves a team that has devoted their careers to children's medicine.

From nurses to radiologists, anesthesiologists to social workers, child life specialists and so many others, our team works with each family and child to provide expert, compassionate care with the child at the center. For everyday care, to when the everyday becomes the unexpected, Children's National provides a healthcare experience designed with kids in mind, and delivers confidence and assurance when parents need it most.

Jeffrey Dome, MD, PhD

Oncologist

The benefit of having researchers who are creating the studies at Children's National is that they have a deeper understanding of the subtleties of treatment. A lot of centers offer the same research studies, but they're not the ones who developed these studies. So there's extra insight that takes place from the providers at Children's National.

Jeffrey Dome, MD, PhD is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics/Hematology-Oncology. He is currently the Division Chief of Oncology at Children's National and is the Principle Investigator at the Children's Research Institute (CRI) Center for Cancer and Immunology Research. He specializes in pediatric solid tumors with an emphasis on Wilms tumors and other pediatric kidney tumors. As chair of the Renal Tumor Committee for the Children's Oncology Group, Dr. Dome also oversees clinical trials for Wilms tumors and other childhood kidney cancers in more than 200 children's hospitals. He has been awarded the Young Investigators Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Giulio D'Angio Award by the International Conference on the Molecular and Clinical Genetics of Childhood Renal Tumors. In addition, Dr. Dome has authored more than 30 articles and textbook chapters on pediatric kidney tumors.

Child Life

Child life specialists can provide psychological preparation for medical procedures, as well as emotional support before, during, and after treatment. Child life specialists are specially trained and certified to help children, adolescents, and families understand and cope with illness, treatment, hospitalization, and therapeutic play experiences. Child life specialists are responsible for maintaining unit playroom and teen room activities. In addition, child life specialists can provide games, toys, small electronics, and help in celebrating milestones such as patient birthdays.

Why Children's

Every child receives care from a team that specializes in his or her type of cancer.

At Children'a National, every cancer patient receives care from a team devoted to one of the following specialties: lymphomas, lukemias, solid tumors or brain tumors. Each type of cancer has its own set of rules and variables, which is why this level of specialized team care is so important. These teams bring more experience to every patient, know how to formulate the best treatment plans, know what to expect during treatment and deliver an overall higher level of care for patients and families during their cancer journey.

Our teams also bring specialized personal care for children of all age groups, including older children. Teens will naturally ask broader and deeper questions, have different ranges of maturity, can feel self-conscious about receiving special care, and may not know how to fully express their thoughts and feelings. It's why we assign each family a child-life specialist who can help with the tough questions, provide encouragement, and offer emotional support during this incredibly important time.

Finally, a cancer diagnosis can affect everyone in a family. Siblings will wonder how they can help. Parents want to know how to handle a new family dynamic. This also is where Children's National shines with resources that can ease everyone.

Understanding the options is the best course of action and we'll help answer all of your questions about the process of choosing a hospital. Please explore the rest of ChildrensNational.org or call today to make an appointment.
